Indeed. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim looks like a great game and will be a great game to play before Mass Effect 3 comes out.

I just got Skyrim and it's a very BIG game to say the least.

Here are my quick thoughts on it.

First the bad:

It has several bugs and glitches in it the most annoying for me in the dead dragons falling out of the sky, it is funny once or twice but after 10 times it becomes stupid looking. Another one is the invisible horse that is funny once or twice but also gets annoying.

The game has frozen up on me twice already.

One patch is already out and more are on the way. I've read that the PS3 version has problems with save files getting corrupted and not wanting to load I think that they have already fixed or will fix it in the next patch.

The marriage option is a joke and ruins some characters like Alea the Huntress.

The main quest gets buried very easily and doesn't come off or feel as urgent as the main quest in Oblivion.

The skill constellations are pretty but don't make much sense (at least to me).

The horses are very slow (I miss Shadowmere from Oblivion) and IMHO only good for fast traveling when you get overburden by a lot of stuff.

Most of the elves are very ugly especially the dark and wood elves. The high elves are OK looking.

Side quests are all in one menu together which can be hard to read and don't give you any clues when you're doing them.

The 3rd person mode looks awkward.

If you don't have a HDTV (like me) then most of the on screen text, (like when you received items or money) and the side quests menu is very hard to read.

And now for the good news:

Graphically it looks great.

They did add a few things from Fallout 3 namely the lock picking mini-game and companion that helps you fight and carry extra loot (but lacks much in character and personality).

The blacksmith option is an excellent feature.

More voices for NPCs. In Oblivion (and Fallout 3 as well) they had about one female and one male voice for each the various races and a couple of stars for key roles. Here the races all have multiple voices.

The Argonians, (reptile people) and Kajait (cat people) are more varied looking than they were in Oblivion where they all looked like humanoid lizards and tigers respectfully and the Orcs also look better.

While the main quest does tend to get lost, when you're doing it, it seems to be the most involved and complex plot of any Bethesda RPG to date.

Christopher Plumber (the Klingon villain in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) does an excellent job in his first video game voice over work.

Also has anyone else here noticed the number of references to various Bioware games in Skyrim?

I found two books in Skyrim called Warrior and Thief both are written by Reven. That is the name of the Jedi Knight or the Sith Lord that you play as in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1.

There is a town called Dawnstar, which is the name of a companion and love interest in Jade Empire.

The leaders of each region of Skyrim are called Jarals but the characters pretty pronounce it as Arl. The same title of several NPC nobles in Dragon Age: Origins.

Then one you give the dragon stone to the Jarl of Whitehold you become a Thane, which is the name of a squad mate and love interest to the female Shepard in Mass Effect 2.

There are also a group of Elven warriors called Justicars, the same name of asari warriors that Samara belongs to in Mass Effect 2.

Yeah I noticed the bioware references too, agree with you on the first two of them but the others are pretty much coincidence due to real historical historical terminology being used Jarl, Thane are real titles of european nobility. Justicars I'm not so sure on.

I didn't know that Jarl/Arl and Thane are real European Nobility titles.

The elves pronounce "Justicars" as juicy-cars (which sounds like the name of a snack candy) and I did hear one of NPCs pronounce it as it's pronounced in Mass Effect 2.
